After much persistence, I was lucky enough to be selected as a volunteer to Antarctica for the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) takeover program for 2018-2019; part of the South African National Antarctic Program (SANAP).
The summer takeover expedition to Antarctica is part of an annual trip to SANAE IV (South African National Antarctic Expedition base) to top up supplies (food, fuel, gear, equipment), swap out over-wintering crews and do maintenance and research at the base. We get there by ship (SA Agulhas II) over 10-12 days of sailing. The expedition takes place between December and March every year. Some 100 odd passengers are typically a part of this kind of trip. Some stay on the ship to do oceanographic research at the same time as the rest of them head to base for training, research and maintenance.
While on the expedition I spent some of my spare time sketching. I didn't have any real plans for these sketches., I decided to take a sketch book along to try to capture the journey for myself because I didn't have a great camera. Mostly it turned out, it was my favourite way to spend my time while down there. An excuse to be alone sometimes, to stare at the scenery, to observe and experience the place just a little deeper. A fantastical meditation in the most remote and wild place.
